Reusing Plastics
Plastics are highly durable and extremely useful materials. They have become integrated with every day living in the sense that is convenient and functional. However, recycling of plastics is something that must be promoted because of the high amount of waste it produces.
Plastic is non-biodegradable and because it contains so much useful energy, recycling of plastics lends many advantages to people and the environment as a whole. It is important that you educate yourself about the types of plastics that can and can’t be recycled and make a conscious effort to contribute to the reusing of plastic material.
How Plastics Are Recycled
Plastics like drinks bottles, carrier bags and containers can all be recycled and reused to make other items like chairs, toys, car parts and plastic lumber. Recycling of these materials is a process that can be broken down into two stages, namely sorting and remolding.
In the sorting stage plastics are taken and divided depending on what type of plastic it is. A coding system of numbers 1 thru 7 is used to classify different types of plastic; 1 being the simplest kind of plastic to recycle and 7 being the most complex.
Once this is done the plastics are then shredded into little flakes that undergo a process of cleaning in order to remove all impurities. This ranges from paper labels that may have been on bottles to various kinds of contamination that may have come from other waste products. It is of utmost importance that plastics are properly cleaned during the recycling process or it cannot be reused to make new products.
After the shredding, the plastics are then melted down into little pellets which are sold to be used in the manufacture of clothing, carpets and floor tiles. It is important to note that plastics cannot be reused to make the same item it used to be. For instance, a drinks bottle will never be recycled to make another drinks bottle. Instead, completely new products are made from recycled plastics.
Benefits Of Recycling Plastics
The biggest benefit of plastics recycling is that it greatly reduces the amount of oil required to make more plastic. This in turn leads to a decrease in the carbon footprint of plastic manufacturing companies. It also significantly slows the depletion of oil as a non-renewable resource.
Recycled plastics can be used to make many different kinds of products like plastic lumber, toys and car parts to name a few. By reusing plastics in this way, a lot of money is saved in the process and less harm is done to the environment as when virgin plastic is used.
Using plastic lumber instead of wood saves a countless amount of trees each year. The saving of oil that would have been used to make new plastic means that there will be more of the valuable non-renewable resource to make things like petrol.
The recycling and reuse of plastics also save a lot of space in landfills where the non-biodegradable materials would have laid for thousands of years. This greatly benefits the environment.
